There is so much debate about what is THE perfect way to eat to attain health and longevity. Working with clients over the last 15 years, one thing is consistent. We are all different. We each have different physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs. Our goals at Revitalive are to help clients clear out the “clutter” in their bodies and lives in order to clearly identify what their physical, emotional and spiritual needs are. Initially we eliminate the physical sources of our addictions, and in turn we expand our human experience and open ourselves to a more profound existence. We begin to feel more whole and able to connect with each other. Our dreams, desires and aspirationsto become more pressing. It is not just what we eat that matters. The approach to how we eat each day matters. It is amazing what one uncovers as they begin to shift their daily eating habits. Take the next few days to reflect on your eating habits. What do your eating habits say or not say about you?

When I was in graduate school, I remember lamenting some detail about some project that is clearly unimportant at the moment. I kept rambling until one of my advisors interrupted my intense monologue. My mentor stated that the most important lesson in life I could master was to learn when something is “good enough.” I remember responding to her, but I could never do something that is just “good enough.” I totally missed her point. I thought she was telling me to lower my standards. She was not saying to do something poorly, she was saying that sometimes when we focus on minutiae we lose the point of the process and are soooo focused on the outcome. Learning when to walk away from something is key for quality of life and self-preservation.

I used to crank and crank away on minor details that were unimportant and make excuses as to why “it” wasn’t good enough or ready yet. The excuse that I was not ready allowed me to avoid living my truth (which I’ll admit is scary and unnerving at times). Now I can crank and crank on minor details but do it anyway, despite my fears. Perfectionism or indecision kept me idling on the sidelines of life. I found that trying my best, having good intentions and letting go of the outcomes felt soooo much better than not trying at all. I finally could let go of the “one day I’m gonna…..” I actually started courageously trying new things and uncomfortably did them. I accepted that I had to start somewhere and just try! I remember fantasies about sewing all my own clothes. I bought a sewing machine, enrolled in classes and got to work on my mission. Well, I tried and found that the fantasy was better than reality. I made the most ridiculous pair of pants and IMMEDIATELY had intense gratitude for all the seamstresses and designers past and present. I appreciated the art and blessed my experience. It was definitely not my niche. But if I didn’t try, I would never know. So, I continued trying many things and practiced being “good enough.” I learned my strengths and what my spirit really loved.

By practicing the “good enough” mantra daily, eventually I found my path in life and trusted the ease and flow that came with it. For a while life was not easy or flowing:) I recognized how my spirit felt when I was in the flow. When I first started eating raw food, I had NO idea how to prepare anything. I allowed myself to experience a raw food cleanse and left the preparing to someone else. After the cleanse, I became more curious and wanted to learn more about the raw food lifestyle. If I had used the excuse that I was not a gourmet chef, then I would NEVER have continued on this path of eating. Thankfully I had worked for years on the “good enough” mantra in other areas of my life and so I applied it to the kitchen when learning to prepare meals for myself. Some of my raw food experiments definitely tasted better than others. The point was that I consistently tried and did not give up. I trusted that what I was doing was good enough for me. It was about the process and learning to consistently care for myself in a loving and nourishing way. Eventually, my raw food culinary skills improved to the point that I began to share what I prepared with others. Eventually we opened Revitalive Cafe and hired a chef that prepares most of our meals. I still enjoy experimenting but have incredible gratitude for the meals that are prepared for me:)

Living my truth is wildly rewarding, energizing, exciting and FUN. This does not mean that fear, anger and sadness are nonexistant. I feel my feelings and do it anyway. The outcome is always better than I could ever imagine, which is more than good enough for me!

Victoria Moran is one of my personal favorite “health heroes.” She’s funny, loving and wise. She’s lost and kept off 60 pounds for over two decades. Her whole message is “love yourself and the rest will follow”, which is really what we’re all about, too. Love yourself enough to choose healthy foods. Love yourself enough to do the inner emotional and spiritual work to free yourself from compulsions that bind you to unhealthy behaviors. Love yourself to nurture your body, your mind, your spirit and your relationships so that you can give and share with others.

When you come to the Vibrant Life Expo, you’ll have the wonderful opportunity to listen to Victoria speak about creating a charmed life. She relates on her website that she “knew” she lived a charmed life when at age 16, Paul McCartney bought her a drink! She figures that even as an overweight teen with bad skin, if she could meet one of the Beatles she definitely led a charmed life. I love that spunky attitude and her spiritual, life affirming way of encouraging others to grow and embrace change is refreshing over other health, fitness and motivational coaches.

Victoria’s work has appeared in many national magazines and she’s the author of 10 books. But what I admire about her most is her gracious, all encompassing love that just pours generously from every page of her writing.

Come and meet Victoria at the Vibrant Life Expo, May 22.

I’ve joked that people seem to think that someone like me who runs a holistic education and wellness center was born with lettuce in hand. People imagine that you’ve always lived your current life. Ginger Burr is someone like that. To look at Ginger today – sleek, stylish, and always beautiful – a successful entrepreneur and fashion stylist, owner of Total Image Consultants, you’d think that she was obsessed with fashion since childhood. Not so. In fact, she reveals that she really wasn’t that interested in fashion as a teen and into her twenties. It took her thirty years of exploring various styles to find a mentor to guide her into her current career. Today, Ginger helps women get in touch with their inner beauty and express it on the outside.

How many of you are wearing baggy, shapeless clothes to hide your body? Do you watch shows like “What Not to Wear” and think, “Gee, if only I had a Stacey or Clinton to take me shopping, I could look good, too.” Ginger reveals in her writing, coaching, mentoring and speaking engagements techniques to dress according to what pleases you – not what pleases fashion designers!

I hope you’ll get the chance to hear Ginger speak at the Vibrant Life Expo. It could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for to let your inner beauty shine.

As we head towards the exciting launch of our May 22 Vibrant Life Workshop, I can’t help but reflect on the “health heroes” in my life. I wrote about my own journey from the typical American diet to raw food and holistic living last week. This week, I want to introduce you to new health heroes.

First, though, let’s talk a little bit about how to define the word “health.” Most people define health by the absence of disease. They say, “I’m healthy” when what they really mean is “I’m not running a fever or experiencing a major illness.”

But health is so much more than the absence of sickness! To me, after so many years of feeling tired, fat and grumpy all the time, health means that I’m at a natural body weight for my height. I feel energetic when I get up in the morning and I have energy to spare throughout the day. My disposition is sunnier, and while I do respond to everyday stimuli (yes, if someone cuts me off in traffic I get mad, but I don’t dwell on it) I don’t fume and fuss or fly off the handle the way that I used to. And oh yes – I’m healthy in that I don’t struggle with seasonal allergies, chronic low energy, sinus infections and the like. This is not to say that I never get sick. When I do get a cold, I notice that I recover much more quickly. After all, I’m not Superman or Wonder Woman. I do feel happier, healthier, and more alive than I did when I ate junk food all those years.

During the years when I was actively searching for an answer to my health problems, I read many books and attended many lectures. I talked to lots of people. Gradually, I developed a list of my own personal health heroes. These are people whose messages ‘spoke’ to me. Sometimes their messages were simply what I needed to hear and delivered at the right time. Other messages informed and shaped my view of what it means to be healthy, happy and whole.

Think about your health heroes today. Who will you choose?
